So You’re Having a Spiritual Awakening

WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

Lately, many people on our planet are experiencing some degree of spiritual awakening, and many more will follow. That you’re reading this blog is a clear sign you’re amid an awakening. But what exactly is a spiritual awakening? Broadly speaking, it’s when the needs of your soul are being compelled to be expressed at the expense of the ego. Living in modern society stifles our soulful needs and our innate humanity in exchange for being an acceptable cog in the social matrix of the planet. Through a spiritual awakening we are no longer sheepish followers but becoming self-empowered leaders. In other words, it’s a process of discovering your authentic self.

WHY A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING IS OFTEN CHALLENGING

You didn’t consciously decide to take this awakening journey; it just sort of happened all beyond your control. There was no time to plan or prepare, and now you feel helpless, at the mercy of the unknown. You don’t even know where you are on this path and what the destination could possibly be. And the endless possibilities of what you could be doing to move you forward freeze you with overwhelm.

That’s why many develop symptoms like insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, and every type of flu-like symptom. This challenging period of the awakening is commonly referred to as “The Dark Night of the Soul.” During a spiritual awakening, ideas and beliefs we held about ourselves, society and meaning of life as true, are proven to be false. This means we no longer have a clear identity during the process, so you will experience all the symptoms of grief as you mourn the loss of the old you and the You 2.0 emerges.

This growth puts the ego in a death spiral as there’s no longer an obvious true reality to grasp which freaks out our nervous system with anxiety. Your immune system kicks in to rid the body of the energy from these old toxic beliefs held on the cellular level giving us coughs and colds, body aches and nausea. Unpleasant insomnia follows, as the time around 3AM is when spirit is most active and requires your attention.

Because your ego is damaged from the lack of control in childhood, it subconsciously always needs to control everything. And now you’re asked to learn to surrender and trust the path of your soul and the Universe but you have no tools to accomplish it. This is the key aspect that makes a spiritual awakening so challenging because many of us grew up not trusting our caretakers, so the whole awakening experience becomes a major triggering event until we figure out how to heal that trigger. Additionally, many powerful aspects of our humanity like multi-dimensionality are deemed evil by religions, so finding self-acceptance is another possible trigger.

If you feel you’re not worthy of love, or you’re not enough just being you and have general low self-esteem, the awakening process can be agonizing.

NOT ALL AWAKENINGS ARE CHAOTIC

All that being said, a spiritual awakening is not universally chaotic, as not everyone having a spiritual awakening is dealing with the same emotional triggers.  How much unconscious resistance you hold to releasing old attachments and accepting your authentic self, determines the level of difficulty.

REDUCING SYMPTOMS

Where you are on the journey doesn’t really matter right now, but where you’re going sure does. As mentioned, the distress you’re feeling is caused by your ego’s feeling a lack of safety from the perceived unknown destination.  So, let’s trick the ego into believing it has some control by giving the journey structure and creating an achievable end goal with milestone markers en route. With a destination comes a clearer purpose, and that destination is to reconnect to self-love

THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO MOVE FORWARD

I made it through years of the midnight of the soul, and kundalini awakening, and what worked best for my spiritual growth was when I finally figured out that I can reframe my awakening experience by naming it a journey focused on discovering, releasing and healing the various energies preventing the deepest connection to my inherent human spirituality of self-love, so I can live authentically. As mentioned, the purpose of any awakening is to discover your soul’s authentic soul expression and to become unapologetically you.

How do you learn these tools that worked for me to create your own healing experience? I share them in a recently published book specifically written to help those at any stage of a spiritual awakening, called, Your Trauma Healing Journey: Lifeprint Reiki’s Guide to Reconnecting to Self-Love. In it, I discuss all the various types of unresolved trauma that could be triggering you now, and offer shadow work exercises to facilitate healing. By consciously taking steps to reconnect to self-love, we reduce the challenging effects of spiritual growth.

GAINING SELF-AWARENESS

Gaining self-awareness to the root cause of your triggers is a crucial part of the journey to allow them to process. Although our soul learns through suffering, it doesn’t know what the lesson is yet. So, if you continually ask yourself in meditation, “What am I learning from this pain?” the answers will help move you faster through the awakening process.

As mentioned, a spiritual awakening demands we learn to surrender many aspects of life we wrongly believe as true. Unfortunately, you can’t learn to surrender and trust the Universe until you discover your current obstacles to achieving it. This book is filled with many exercises, other insights and coping tools to help you achieve the necessary growth and feel empowered during this awakening journey instead of a victim of it.

You only need to suffer until you realize you don’t.
